December 13th- Christmas Thoughts by David Starsky by Lapfordlass

I long for Christmas all year round;
For snow to fall without a sound;
To see the lights and mistletoes
And “folks dressed up like Eskimos”.

I love the sound of “Jingle bells”,
And decorations, and the smells
That make my season full of cheer.
I try to keep it all the year.

He doesn’t like the phony sights
Of money spent on twinkly lights.
He thinks about the poor and sad
And how for some there is no ‘glad’.

He misses folks, those long since gone,
Who used to fill his childhood home;
Who gave him hugs that were enough
And made the season bright with love.

I understand why he’s a Grinch.
I know he’s got a heart too big.
He tells me that it’s all a fake
Yet gets me presents anyway.

We’ll sing the carols, Christmas Eve,
And put the popcorn on the tree.
We’ll share the Day with each dear friend
‘Cause love’s what matters in the end.

  1. I love this poem, Lapfordlass! So very true from Starsky’s perspective. Thank you for this wonderful gift! KUDOS

      1. Wonderful poem, it describes them both so well. I can just see Starsky singing Christmas songs all year and driving Hutch mad!

  2. “‘Cause love’s what matters in the end.”
    Perfect summation of the Season and their commitment to each other, Lapfordlass. Very nicely done!

    1. Pat, if you don’t mind I’ll just second this. Lapfordlass has captured Starsky’s voice (not an easy thing to do in a poem!) but more important Starsky’s love and understanding of his friend.
      Thank you, Lapfordlass! This is a pleasure to read.

  3. Well done, Lass! Starsky knows all Hutch’s hidden emotions, even the ones Hutch doesn’t know. The flow of the poetry is smooth and of course the wording is perfect. 💗

  4. Best explanation of why Hutch dislikes Christmas I have read. It is because he still mourns for loved ones who have passed away.

    Very poignant.

    1. Thank you. It always seems to me there’s a lot going on under the surface with Hutch. Glad you liked my interpretation!

  5. This is a wonderful poem from Starsky’s pov, and you made his voice is so clear! He really knows the Hutch that Hutch hides, and sees the sorrow and grief inside his heart, that makes him sensitive to all the fakery and commercialism that surrounds the holidays. Starsky understands the wounds and conflicts inside this beautiful blond, that aren’t apparent to most, and that make it hard for him to embrace the frivolity, and festivity of the season. He sees all that, and loves him even more for it, just the way he is. His insight is deep re his blintz, and his love is unconditional. Really beautiful, lapordlass!

    1. Yes, he knows his Hutch and what’s going on under the surface. So glad you liked it and could see all the layers 😀

  6. That was brilliant!
    I especially loved this part:

    “He doesn’t like the phony sights
    Of money spent on twinkly lights.
    He thinks about the poor and sad
    And how for some there is no ‘glad’.”

    That’s so Hutch. He really does feel so much empathy towards the marginalized and disenfranchised.

  7. I agree with Carol, poems is not something I usually seek out, but I loved this one! It’s so them and I’m very impressed with your ability to write a beautiful poem!

  8. This poem is exactly the way I see Starsky and Hutch’s relationship. So sweet. And I love the pic–just the look on Starsky’s face as he gazes at Hutch–he always seems to focus all of his love when he looks at Hutch.

  9. Lovely poem! Not that Starsky doesn’t have positive attributes, but other than Hutch’s looks, there is something special about him that attracts me to him. Could be the multi-layers of his personality. Even in “Little Girl Lost” he gripes about Christmas, but at the same time, has Christmas cards and a plastic Santa Claus on top of his piano, a Christmas wreath on his apartment door, and Kiko moves off his coffee table a candle with a festive ring around the candle’s glass vase.

    Merry Christmas, my friend!

    1. Thanks Robbin! Glad you’re feeling better enough to leave comments! glad you liked it. yes, Hutch isn’t really a grinch at all – he’s loving and generous, he just doesn’t like the fake stuff that can go along with the season!
