December 8th: The Answer by M H E Priest

Author’s Note: Thanks to MatSir for the suggestions.

A few hours after partaking of Huggy’s “patented” hangover cure, Starsky and I were finally out of the grunting and stumbling stage and began putting the Monopoly game back in its box.

Knowing it would never be a good time to ask this particular question, I did so anyway. “So, Starsk, did you ever ask Terry to marry you?”

He stopped separating the money into piles. “Yeah, I did, right before she was discharged.” He returned to his task, never once looking at me.

“You wanna talk about it, buddy?”

He finally looked at me, shot me his apologetic smile. “Yeah, I do. Sorry I never told you before. Guess I was still kinda… shocked.” Continue reading “December 8th: The Answer by M H E Priest”

December 23rd: A Holiday Mystery by m. butterfly

December 20

Hutch hated everything about Christmas — including surprises of any kind.

He’d just finished blending his breakfast concoction when someone knocked. He assumed it was his better half, who must have had the traffic fairies on his side for a change.

“It’s not locked, Starsk. C’mon in.”

When Starsky didn’t burst in right away, Hutch headed for the door to investigate. But he didn’t open it.

“It’s too early to be pulling one of your stupid stunts, if that’s what you’re doing,” he warned. “Starsky?”

Silence was the only answer he got.

It then occurred to him that he hadn’t heard the red and white clown car pull up to the curb in front of the building. Now in full detective mode, Hutch slowly drew his weapon and eased the door open. Continue reading “December 23rd: A Holiday Mystery by m. butterfly”

December 6th: Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues by Monica Rose Kiesel

This story is dedicated to Nancy Roots for inspiring it.

Starsky had seemed his usual self when Hutch walked into the squad room that morning. He’d told Hutch three bad jokes — two of them he’d told him just the week before; he’d told Minnie she looked smokin’; he assured Dobey that his new diet was working because he looked like he’d lost at least five pounds (he didn’t); and he paid Hutch the ten dollars he owed him without even being asked.

Hutch hadn’t asked why he was in such a good mood; one thing he’d learned being a cop was that while good things — good luck, good times, good weather, good moods — never lasted, questioning them could kill any of them on the spot.

Still, his partner was naturally upbeat, so Hutch didn’t think he’d been unreasonable to expect his cheeriness to make it through to lunch. Continue reading “December 6th: Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues by Monica Rose Kiesel”

December 11th The ChrisYearValenRickBirthday Sweater by babs

August

Starsky stared in dismay at the Hawaiian Punch now staining Hutch’s white cable knit sweater. “Damn it.”

“Hey. It was an accident,” Hutch said. He grabbed a napkin and dabbed ineffectually at the blotch of reddish pink.

“Stupid arm.” He looked at his trembling left hand with disgust. “Some birthday, huh?”

Hutch tossed the napkin onto the picnic table and took Starsky’s hand in his. “It’s the best birthday, Starsk. You’re here to celebrate it with me.” He cleared his throat and blinked, looked up at the twilight sky.

Rosey Dobey came running full tilt towards them. Starsky braced himself for impact but there was no need. Hutch stepped in front of him, on high alert, still unable, Starsky knew, to let go of the need to protect. He intercepted her before she could careen into Starsky.

“Your cake, Uncle Ken. Mom’s lighting the candles. Hurry.” She peeked around Hutch, took Starsky’s hand. “C’mon, Uncle Dave. You’re gonna sit with me.”

Starsky pasted one of his ‘no, no, I’m getting better all the time’ smiles on and followed. Hutch isn’t angry, he reminded himself. But even the chocolate cake couldn’t quite take away the feeling that he was more than useless. Continue reading “December 11th The ChrisYearValenRickBirthday Sweater by babs”

December 15th: Please Don’t Feed the Polar Bears by SHybaby

Starsky peered out his window as the plane accelerated down the runway, his heart beating with anticipation. He patted Hutch’s knee while still focused on the view.

“Hey Hutch, how long until we get there again?”

“We have two connections through Vancouver and Winnipeg, then a charter flight to Churchill, so with layovers and such included, we’ll be there in about nine hours from now.” Hutch looked up from his reading material and joined in looking out the window.

Starsky swiveled to look at Hutch and said, “You excited?”

“I’m over the moon.” Hutch’s face filled with emotion. “I’ve always wanted to go on an animal safari, but never in a million years did I imagine that you would give me a gift to see polar bears… in northern Canada… on the tundra, no less.” Continue reading “December 15th: Please Don’t Feed the Polar Bears by SHybaby”

December 14th: Mixed Up Doubles Part 2 by LilyK

Part 1 is here

Captain Dobey’s door was closed. Starsky didn’t stop but barged into Dobey’s office, rage filling him. He could feel the blood in his veins humming with anger and outrage. Dobey was behind his desk.

“Finally!” Starsky shouted. “’bout fucking time!”

Dobey jumped, clearly startled. “Starsky, what in God’s name are you screaming about?” he demanded.

“I have proof!” Starsky cried.

“Proof?” Dobey looked confused. “Sit down, Starsky.”

“No! I ain’t sitting down until you tell me what happened to Hutch!” Continue reading “December 14th: Mixed Up Doubles Part 2 by LilyK”

December 13th Mixed Up Doubles Part 1 by LilyK

The telephone ran quietly; the ringer set on the lowest setting. His mother didn’t like being startled by the jangling of the bell. She claimed it gave her palpitations every time it chimed. The darned thing only brought bad news, she always said. Starsky was closest to the phone, so he picked up the receiver.

“Hello.”

“Starsk.”

“Hey, Hutch!” Starsky smiled into the phone. “How are–”

Hutch cut him off. “Listen… I can’t pick you up from the airport tomorrow.”

“Huh? Hutch? Can you speak up? I can barely hear ya.” Starsky moved away from the noise of the dining room where his mother, her sister, and Nicky were chattering away. “What?”

“I can’t pick you up tomorrow. I’m sorry.” Continue reading “December 13th Mixed Up Doubles Part 1 by LilyK”

December 17th: Cindy Claus by Dawnwind

As the car crested the hill and Starsky rotated the steering wheel to the right, Hutch stared up at a huge stuffed Santa Claus lashed to the signpost indicating the intersection of Santa Clara Ave and Santa Rita Road.

“Why does Santa have a girl’s name?” Hutch said out loud. It was literally the first time he’d considered this: something that was more in Starsky’s purview than his own.

“You’re the one who speaks three–or is it four–languages,” Starsky replied, peering at the numbers on the houses for the correct address.

“Exactly why I was struck by the inconsistency. In Spanish, Santa would be a female saint.” Hutch pointed to 4696 Santa Clara up ahead. “Which he is not.”

“Saint Nicolas,” Starsky said, almost to himself. “Or, in our case, Nick Pasqual, purveyor of illicit drugs purloined from Payless Pharmacy.” Continue reading “December 17th: Cindy Claus by Dawnwind”
