December 13th- Yule Log by Mortmere

Artist’s note: Ursula Angstrom kindly sent me a suspiciously gay vintage ad she had found online, suggesting I might want to make a Starsky/Hutch version of it. And lol! my muse co-operated! So this one is for Ursula. What can I say – it takes a lot of lube to make a huge log like that glide smoothly! But don’t ask me about the bizarre faceless reindeer babes the guys have left behind in the background, they were there in the original.

Ohhh my, as George Takei would say. That is so… slick. You did a marvelous job, my dear! They both look extremely happy with their Christmas plans.

  2. Endeni says:

OMF, here it is, the period-correct tube of lube! πŸ˜€ Just tube of lube! :D! *_*

    • Endeni says:

Just “brilliant” I wanted to write! *facepalm*
Stupid captcha, it took me three tries to get it right and at the end I hit the wrong copy&paste… πŸ˜€

  3. ChocolateEgg says:

That is hilarious! Love that they each have their own choice of lube. Were they gifts to each other? And that log has to be a phallic symbol! πŸ˜‰ And yes, the original is … interesting.

    • Mortmere says:

Thanks! Lol, I think any lube one of them has will eventually be a gift to the other. And the log is definitely a phallic symbol! The original is apparently from the late 1940s. Textron had lots of really surreal ads!

  4. Jennifer C says:

Wow-so very interesting! Great redo of the ad with your own embellishments, of course!

    • Mortmere says:

Sorry, my reply to your comment slipped way down to the bottom of the list due to some captcha weirdness. Here we go again:

Thank you – the embellishments were one of those β€œlol, of course, what else” moments I love in creative work.

  5. Nancy Roots says:

    LOLOLOL
    This is brilliant!
You did the original ad justice. Love that Hutch is in blue and Starsky red, as that seemed to be “their” colors.
    Awesome gift, Mortmere!
    And thank you, Ursula!

    • Mortmere says:

Thank you! Ursula definitely deserves the thank yous, because this wouldn’t have happened without her!

  6. Nancy Roots says:

And what TOUGH men! barefoot in the snow!

    • Mortmere says:

LOL! They are tough, though actually the white fluff might be clouds. Google Textron vintage ads and you’ll find lots of strange (really strange!) stuff going on “on a cloud somewhere” (if I may suggest this could stand as a prequel to my art series of that name, lololol).

  7. Spencer says:

OMG! That is hysterical! A big thank you to you and Ursula!

  8. Jane says:

Amazing ad and great manip! Thank you. I’ll be smiling at this a lot this Advent. Lucky 13 indeed!

  9. Wightfaerie says:

Lol. Love this image. Well done to you and Ursula. Thank you for making me smile today.

  10. mvernet says:

Wow! That ad is priceless and the manip so well done and funny as heck! Leave it to Ursula to unearth something so unusual. As always great job on the artwork. You guys made my day. Happy Holidays!

    • Mortmere says:

Thank you! If you want more laughs, google “Textron vintage ads” or “unintentionally gay ads”. There’s a LOT of them! Happy Holidays to you, too!

  11. kat says:

This is amazing! The original is so straight… NOT! LOL! Fabulous work. I’m grinning from ear to ear.

  12. Ragdoll230 says:

Looks like a good time is about to be had by all!

  13. Edie M Crouse says:

This wonderful, Mortmere. Kind of a gay Saturday Evening Post type of pic. So funny with the lubes of choice. And Starsky and Hutch are adorable in their jammies.

  14. Calliatra says:

Oh that’s such a fun picture, and such a well-done manip, too! I love it!

  15. Mortmere says:

Thank you – the embellishments were one of those “lol, of course, what else” moments I love in creative work. πŸ˜€

  16. Garrideb says:

I love your art, and I love unusual vintage ads, so this is perfect! I love how incredibly happy Starsky & Hutch look to be romping around in the clouds in their pajamas. I agree the faceless reindeer babes are bizarre. If they had faces I wouldn’t think them any weirder than the cloud setting, but the facelessness is… a choice. Thankfully S&H seem to be heading to a more private location!

    • Mortmere says:

Thanks, I’m glad to hear you enjoy it on both levels! The original has a dreamlike quality (I guess that’s the reason for all the craziness, them advertizing sleepwear), but I’m not sure if the reindeer ladies here are meant to be sexy dream babes or a nightmare the guys are running away from! πŸ˜€

  17. Ursula Angstrom says:

Mortmere’s artistic genius transformed the ad I found online into a gem for the 2018 Advent Calendar. Thank you so much for dedicating this holiday manip to me. I am honored, Mortmere.

How you managed to find the perfect facial expressions to make this ad so joyful and fun is dazzling. You talent mesmerizes me.

    Happy Holidays, My Friend,

    Ursula

    • Mortmere says:

This wouldn’t have happened without you, Ursula! (Or without our boys looking so ridiculously happy in each other’s presence in the early SH promos!)

  18. oonna says:

Your art and manips are so brilliant.
Love the original pic but even more your funny version

  19. Keri Ann Tomkins says:

This is brilliant! I love how Hutch isn’t even a little bit subtle with his giant can of Crisco!

    Too cute, thank you!
