Calm Seas
Starsky POV
He paints calm seas in greens and blues
His spirit expressed in the varied hues.
He keeps his works in a dusty stack
With caution I pull one from the pack.
The water has depth from layered strokes
The sky’s hidden sun holds a glimpse of hope.
The beach is pristine, save for lone footprints.
The effect is subtle with natural tints.
I gaze upon the azure horizon
I imagine a tall ship to sail upon
I would conquer this sea and break the calm
Claim it and protect it from any harm.
Someday I will fill a gallery
With his works that mean so much to me
Framed and hung on well-lit walls
His brilliance displayed for one and all
He builds tall ships with wood and thread.
His hidden strength and words unsaid
Expressed in intricate riggings and sails
Lovingly crafted in all its details.
I watch his hands as he tightens a string
His firm, gentle touch makes my heart sing.
His eyes are intense and opened wide
I catch a brief glimpse of the man inside.
I imagine a pirate, sure and bold
Conquering seas on his search for gold.
Claiming the waves in his domain
Then calming the frantic seas again.
Someday I will paint his ship on my sea
Show him how much he means to me.
Together we’ll sail beyond the frame
And journey to lands we dare not name.

These poems are so beautiful and expressive. Such a tease to make me picture Starsky as a pirate! Now there’s a bucket of yum!
Thank you, buddy! Starsky as a pirate and Hutch as a captured artist. Boots, tight pants and poet shirts. Yo ho ho!
P.S. Thanks to Flamingo and the elves for the amazing pictures. How did they do that? Must be Christmas magic!!!
Love your beautiful poems, Mvernet. There´s much love between the lines.
Thank yo so much. Oh, yes. Much love between the lines.
Oh my goodness! These are magnificent! The sea and the tall ship are such perfect, beautiful metaphors. Hutch’s paintings and Starsky’s ships. Oh my. This is so awesome. Must be read more than once. I love this! (I guess this is what ‘gushing’ means. 😉 )
Thanks for the gushing! I love the gushing!!! I was quite happy when the two metaphors clicked in my head. Good brain. Thanks for the love!
What nice poems! Well done. Thank you!
Thanks for your comment. I’m so glad you enjoyed my gift.
Very sweet, and so imaginative! I can just see Hutch imagining Starsky as a pirate, and I love the image.
Dread Pirate Starsky has a nice ring to it! Thank you for your kind words.
“Expressed in intricate riggings and sails
Lovingly crafted in all its details.”
Beautiful word-images, mvernet, and perfectly fit to each person. Thank you for these sweet, lovely gifts!
Thank you! I love to write poems from a character’s POV. It’s very liberating. I’m happy you enjoyed it!
Wow, beautiful, sweetie. Perfect fit for both guys. Thank you for this lovely gift.
Thank you so much! I am amazed myself how well it fit. I had great inspiration.
Sigh.
So beaufitully evocative. The images brought to mind fit each of them so well.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful present, mvernet!
You are very welcome. The Advent Calendar is such a pleasure to write for. Thanks for your enthusiasm.
So beautiful! I love have you’ve captured each other’s talents in each other’s eyes. Perfectly done. This was the first thing I opened in this years calendar and it filled my heart. Thank you, M!
What a great compliment! And it’s so nice to hear from you Samudee. you have a sweet heart. Thank you!
Gorgeous imagery, lyrical prose that describes the amazing relationship between the guys. Perfect! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for commenting! It’s the beyond the buddy cop details, like hobbies, in the canon that adds so much to the relationship and make S&H so wonderful to write.
What a wonderful set of poems! When I read the first one, I’d forgotten about Starsky’s canonical ship-building, so when I started the second one, I had a moment of, “Aha! This is Perfect!” because Starsky admiring Hutch’s ocean paintings while Hutch admires his ship-making is just so beautifully symmetrical. How did you think of it?!
As others have said, the image of pirate-Starsky is fantastic. And considering Hutch’s POV poem, Hutch really wants to be conquered by this pirate! 😉
The last two lines are such a perfect ending – “sail beyond the frame” is a beautiful image. <3
As always thank you for your kind and insightful comment. How did I think of it? I ask myself that! More like; “Where the **** did that come from?” The muse worked overtime on this. I think I dreamed it, just before falling asleep. I was trying to think of a subject for a POV poem, and was thinking the beautiful artwork I bought at SHarecon of Hutch painting. (I can’t make out he artist, M.KIO or Melli K. Flamingo would know, she knows all.) Anyway I sleepily thought, “He paints calm seas.” Then Starsky’s tall ship models came to mind. Bingo!
In my head canon Hutch paints blue seascapes of Lake Superior when he’s lonely. (SIGH) I did watch the Fatal Charm themed music video “I’m Gonna Getcha,” by lovethatblueeyedsoul on youtube. (One of the many stalker songs of the seventies and eighties when I guess it was considered endearing to stalk someone.) I watched it about fifty times to observe Diana throwing Hutch’s paintings around. I’m pretty sure I saw a blue beach scene in there. The elves did a fantastic job of adding a ship to one of Hutch’s blue period artworks. (I think it’s actually a bowl of fruit.) And yes, it’s all a metaphor for S&H wanting each other. Badly.
So you see, it takes a fandom to write a poem.
Wow. Just – Wow. Mvernet, you are so talented. Poetry doesn’t usually scan easily for me, but I fell right into these and loved them. Thank you, and the elves for this gift.
Thank you for this great compliment. I know poetry is not for everyone. I try to keep things simple, the important thing is the emotion expressed. I love to write in a character’s POV. It’s something people can relate to, I hope.
Your words paint a beautiful scene as well!
Awwww. Now that comment made my heart go squish. Thank you so much!
Mvernet, your poem Calm Seas is dazzling. Every line is so evocative. My heart is soaring!
I love how you described the beauty of Paul’s hands. They are a work of art. You captured that perfectly.
It is mind boggling how you noticed that painting in an episode and used it to create such an enchanting poem.
This line where you wrote: The sky’s hidden sun holds a glimpse of hope made my mind and heart explode in awed wonder. It was like watching fireworks made of words describe something in a way that made me feel music.
The artist J.M.W. Turner painted skies with hidden sun effects many times on canvas. Every time I see the sun hiding behind the clouds I try in vain to figure out what emotions that sight evokes. Your insight describes it perfectly—and poignantly—in that line. Whitman and Millay are jealous of you tonight. Me: I am awed, but not surprised, your insight sparkles like diamonds in your poems.
The juxtaposed POV’s made your poem feel like a magical ballet pas de deux. Write a story about the day when Hutch’s paintings are on display in a gallery as only YOU can. I am anticipating that already.
Ursula
Thank you so much, Ursula. So nice to hear from you. you always see more in my work than I do and encourage me to keep on plugging away. I love your phrase, “fireworks of words” I am thrilled you were moved by my poems.
I think Whitman and Millay are safe, but I’ll treasure those sentiments for a long, long, time. Thank you again for your enthusiasm and heartfelt praise, and Happy Holidays!
You painted beautifully with your words, thank you!
Thank you for your kind comment. I’m glad you enjoyed your gift.
Loved the images these poems invoked!!
Mvernet, loved each poem, but it’s extra special the way they mirror each other. They both express similar feelings that haven’t been fully shared yet. Beautifully done.
Name is LauraY, not LautaY – can’t type on my iPad, lol.
