Note: Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, The duet, Do You Love Me, is sung by Tevye and his wife, Golde, to each other. You can see it here for reference.
With apologies to Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick
(Starsky)
Do you love me?
(Hutch)
Do I what?
(Starsky)
Do you love me?
(Hutch)
Do I love you? After Gunther tried to kill you, and you lived to tell the tale,
We’ve been reassigned.
You’re upset. Get drunk. Let this lie down.
Maybe it’s cold pizza.
(Starsky)
Hutch, I’m asking you a question. Do you love me?
(Hutch)
You’re a turkey!
(Starsky)
So’re you. But do you love me?
(Hutch)
Do I love you?
For eighty-eight episodes, I’ve investigated with you,
ridden in your car, typed your reports.
Bought you beer, watched your back.
After eighty-eight eps, why talk about this right now?
(Starsky)
The first time I met you was at the academy. I was scared.
(Hutch)
I was shy.
(Starsky)
I was nervous.
(Hutch)
So was I.
(Starsky)
But my father told my mother that we’d learn to trust our partners.
But, it’s more…I’m asking, buddy. Do you love me?
(Hutch)
I’m your partner!
(Starsky)
I know. But do you love me?
(Hutch)
Do I love him?
For eighty-eight episodes, I’ve been with him,
Argued with him, joked with him.
For eighty-eight eps, I waited for this.
If that’s not love, what is?
(Starsky)
Then you love me?
(Hutch)
I always have.
(Starsky)
And I’ve always loved you, too.
(Together)
It doesn’t change a thing, but even so,
After eighty-eight eps, it’s nice to know.

Love this, sweetie. It’s a double edge sword for me. It’s so them, but also reminds me of watching Paul doing that scene in Fiddler, the stage show in the UK. Makes me happy on both counts. Thank you for the cute gift and the memories x
Two memories as one! Yep, I figured since PMG has been Tevye, he could sing this song as Starsky, too. Ta!
Very clever, Dawn!
Thanks!
Love it!! Thank you.
You made me so happy.
Good job, Dawn!
Thank you muchly.
Delightful Dawn!!
Thank you!
I’m afraid I’ve never seen any version of ‘Fiddler’ but this sounds absolutely right. Nicely done!
For those who have never seen Fiddler, we put a link to the YouTube clip of the original song to compare. It’s at the top where it says, “see it here”. The link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_y9F5St4j0
I’m so glad you linked that–it had been ages since I watched!
You should try to see the movie–PMG is adorable as Percheck.
Very cute and fits the music perfectly!
I’m so happy you enjoyed. It was fun to sync the lyrics.
Aw, this is so charming and sweet, I love it! The perfect little treat to find waiting as an advent calendar gift!
Danke! I like that song, and it fits them so well.
Oh, that’s cute! I’d never have thought of that, but it really fits well.
Songs go through my brain constantly, and then they start to morph…
That’s so clever and funny and ultimately very sweet! And now you’ve got me thinking about how work partnerships are often compared to marriages, but how much more true that was in times and places where marriage was essentially a work partnership. So fitting Starsky and Hutch into this particular marriage seems especially perfect!
Thank you! The words just fit them so easily.
Oh man! That’s perfect! PS Fiddler is one of my favorite musicals!
Grin. There are some musicals I say are imprinted in my DNA and this is one of them. Thanks.
This is so clever. I, as a rule, avoid musicals, but I appreciate your word-smithing, fusioning here 🙂
And I embrace nearly all musicals. We are all so different yet love Starsky and Hutch.
Very clever. I’m pretty sure this scene took place for real after the series ended. 😉
Definitely ;-D
Very clever and so warm and fuzzy, too! Thank you!
Thank you, Miss Keri!
So clever!!! This is awesome!!
You’re awesome! Merci.
Clever idea and perfectly executed, Dawn. Very sweet.
Thank you. That’s how my brain works, always inserting words into songs.
