  1. Dawn Rice says:

It was so awesome to hear you two interviewing Flamingo and all her stories. I attended that disaster (her words) SHarecon in 2004–my first SHarecon ever, and had a ball. I really didn’t register all the angst she was going through, although I was one of the people who went in the van with Morgan Logan to get the TV!

    • Garrideb says:

I’m glad you enjoyed the interview, Dawn! So you were at the disaster hotel! It’s amazing that a hotel could be so, so bad at everything, but heartwarming to hear that the con-goers still had a great time. As your first SHareCon, I bet that made quite an impression, going with a group to fetch a TV! It sounds like the kind of thing that might have been a bonding experience.

  2. Sandra says:

Wow, what a great interview! Thanks so much, it was very interesting to hear all the stories, Flamingo told you.

    • Garrideb says:

Thank you for listening! It was a great experience to interview Flamingo, and I’m so happy I get to share it here.

  3. Endeni says:

Just finished listening, what a lovely and interesting interview! Thank you so much for sharing!

    • Garrideb says:

Thanks for listening! I find Flamingo’s stories so fascinating, so I’m thrilled to share them with the fandom!

  4. Mortmere says:

Great stories, thank you for making it possible for all of us to hear them!

  5. Nancy K Roots says:

Thank you, ladies! This was so interesting to listen to!

    • Garrideb says:

You’re welcome! Fandom histories is one of my favorite topics, and it makes me happy to see others enjoying that topic too. Thanks for listening!

  6. Keri Ann Tomkins says:

Awesome interview! Flamingo is one of those people who I could listen to for hours. Real deal. Real fandom history. I was also at the 2004 SHarecon and aware of the problems (I wasn’t on the con committee yet) but so busy with selling the six zines I was premiering at that con and visiting that it was just a drone in the background for me.

I have a feeling that people might get the impression from this interview that I nag Flamingo a lot. It’s all true:)

    Wonderful job, ladies!

    • Garrideb says:

Thank you so much for listening! I 100% agree about being able to listen to Flamingo for hours. One of the nights Flamingo and half a dozen of us or so were up really late, listening to Flamingo talk about writing, publishing, shifting fandom norms, all that stuff. And I was very tired but it was so hard to tear myself away.

You were premiering six zines at the ’04 SHarecon?! Wow! It’s hard to imagine how different that con must have been compared to ’18 SHarecon.

Hey, Flamingo says she only gets things done because of the people around her, so I doubt she minds any nagging! 😉

      • Keri Ann Tomkins says:

Oh, I don’t know, I think I drive her crazy once in a while:) But our to do list is always so long and I’m the keeper of the lists, LOL.

Yep, I premiered six zines in ’04. I’m pretty sure the total of zines premiering that year was sixteen or seventeen. Flamingo had two or three, and Morgan premiered Torn. It was a very exciting zine year. Those were the days.

  7. T.M. says:

Flamingo is a brilliant storyteller. The history of Sharecon is entertaining as it is informative. Thank you, Monica and Rachel, for being skillful interviewers and knowing how to let the subject tell the story.

    • Garrideb says:

I couldn’t agree more about Flamingo’s entertaining and informative history of SHarecon. Thank you so much for listening, T.M., and for the kind words!

  8. Spencer says:

Great interview. Thanks for doing this. I love all the various perspectives and all the different ways people contribute to this great fandom.

    • Garrideb says:

Thank you so much, Spencer! I’m not always inspired to write or vid, but I can almost always talk about fandom, so it’s nice to have a way to share that with others, especially when the people I’m talking to have so much to say about fandom!

  9. Lisa A says:

Great interview!! Yes, I too, could listen to Flamingo all day!! Loved hearing the rocky beginnings and now going and seeing how it all got started!! Thanks for asking her about “Do I Still Love You Rosey Malone!” That is one of my all time favorites and I shudder to think it almost didn’t happen!! Great job and I can’t wait for the next one!!

    • Garrideb says:

Good, I was pretty sure I wasn’t the only one who just wanted to hear Flamingo tell stories all day! I’m glad I got to get some of the background of “Do I Still Love You Rosey Malone” for myself and for you. Shippers can be intense, that’s for sure. Even when I have a One True Pairing (Like Starsky/Hutch) I still often like the idea of other (temporary) partners or additional partners for a threesome, so a story where Starsky loves Hutch and someone else really works for me. I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but the idea of vocally making that known to the point that the author almost doesn’t finish it is pretty sad. I’m also so glad she did finish it!

      Thanks for listening and commenting!
