Author’s Note: Many, many thanks to Flamingo for betaing/editing this story for me, it’s so much better because of her help, and for creating the lovely image at the end.
Starsky leaned over to unlock the passenger door for his partner. They were headed back out on the streets for the last hour of their shift after finishing the latest round of paperwork.
“I think I’m scarred for life after that last one, Hutch,” Starsky said as he started the car.
They’d just arrested their third Santa of the day, and while it was California, a minimum amount of clothing was still required. A Santa hat alone wasn’t anywhere near enough and it hadn’t even been a strategically placed Santa hat. It had been Starsky’s tackle that had finally taken their streaking Christmas-present-stealing thief down and he still couldn’t get the image out of his head.

Paris is lovely this time of the year.
Right now I’m sitting out on our little balcony, sharing a glass of red wine and a nice Brie with Joanne, watching the sun go down over the rooftops. We’ve got the cutest little apartment in an old building just a few blocks from the Seine, with a great view and a bakery right across the street where we can buy fresh croissants every morning.
We’ve got it all worked out. In a few weeks, Joanne will tell her father that those goons trying to kidnap her in the hospital made her so nervous she can’t face living alone and wants a full-time bodyguard. I’ll say the money’s too good to pass up, and hand in my resignation to the SFPD. Mello will have testified by then, so the heat will be off, and with any luck we’ll just quietly slip out of sight here in France.
Joanne has plenty of money from her father, and she’s planning to open a quality dress boutique, so we won’t have to worry about starving. At first I didn’t feel right, knowing where the money comes from, but Joanne says women have to look after themselves because nobody’s going to look after us. If her father had really cared about his family, he wouldn’t have gone into the rackets in the first place. She says I should look at it as us using his money to give ourselves a chance we’d never have had otherwise.
One thing I won’t be trying again is acting. I was so stiff and awkward during that road trip with Starsky and Hutch I nearly messed everything up. I was lucky neither of them tried to put the moves on me; it would have been embarrassing no matter how I turned them down. And I couldn’t have gone along with any funny business, not with Joanne waiting and worrying about me.
I just hated having to play the spoiled little rich girl with them. It isn’t me, and it’s not Joanne either. I kept feeling I was letting her down by acting so helpless. But we’d decided in advance that if my escorts thought I was a little dumb and useless they wouldn’t bother to ask me any hard questions. It was a struggle to keep up the act when the goons were shooting at us, though. I kept grabbing my purse back from Hutch because my gun was tucked down in the bottom, and I wanted to have it where I could get at it fast.
The SFPD trained me well. I’d figured out before we even got to Bay City the leak was in Dobey’s office. And I didn’t trust any of them to make sure Joanne would be safe. None of them cared enough to get between her and the bullet.
That’s the only bad thing about not going back. I really enjoyed being a cop.
But not as much as I enjoy being Joanne Mello’s girlfriend.

Starsky was sitting at the kitchen reading a magazine when Hutch walked into the apartment.
“Hey, babe,” Starsky greeted his partner.
“Hey, babe, yourself,” Hutch replied.
“What’s in the bag? My Christmas present?!”
The Hutchinson finger was pointed. “Don’t start that again.”
“Fine.” Starsky pouted.

Note from Flamingo: This is an updated list of Christmas themed stories with links to where they can be found. They’re separated into two categories: gen or slash. Updating this list was the super secret project I asked for help with a few weeks ago. Volunteers searched for stories and live links, updating the original list first posted in 2012. This involved a large crew of willing fans who gave up a lot of time to this project. They include: Krissy Mae Anderson, Calliatra, Ilana Galadriel, Kerrys2Boys, Endeni, Dianne, Mortmere, Evil Lynn, and kat-byrd. I can’t thank this crew of hard working fans enough. They worked cooperatively, quickly filtering through the internet for as many stories as they could find. I know you’ll enjoy the results of their hard work.

Starsky & Hutch |
Author’s Note: Pacific Rim is a 2013 American science fiction monster movie set in the future, when Earth is at war with the Kaiju, colossal sea monsters that emerge from an interdimensional portal on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. To combat them, humanity creates Jaegers, 250-foot robots, controlled by at least two pilots, whose minds are joined by a mental link called “drifting.” You can see the official trailer for Pacific Rim here. And see two pilots, brothers, suit up and mind meld in this clip.
When pilots drift, they gain intimate knowledge of each other’s memories and feelings. The concept of drift-compatibility made for excellent shipping opportunities and became a common fusion AU in fandom.
When I introduced Suzan to this film, I wasn’t thinking of Starsky and Hutch. But as we discussed drift compatibility, I realized the boys, with their intense partnership, would make them prime Jaeger pilots. And the tight black uniforms they wear would be just perfect for Starsky and Hutch.
This story is directly inspired by Suzan’s art piece, Mind Drift, posted to this year’s Advent Calendar.
Hutch still wasn’t used to the drift. Especially when he was asleep. Or when they were making love.
He was surrounded, enveloped, encased in another human being. It was more passion than he’d ever felt, more love than he’d ever known, and all for him. He could be as greedy as he wanted, taking as much as he could bear. And he could bear so much!
