December 17th- Fools Like Me by exbex

When Ken Hutchinson was growing up, he had a favorite tree on his grandfather’s farm. It was perfect for climbing, and eventually its sturdy branches held the treehouse that Ken and his grandfather had built together over one summer.

Later, Ken would identify that it was the constant nature of the tree that was so reassuring. Every year, tentative buds would bloom into leaves which would turn lush and green before becoming brittle, dry, and shifting to fiery colors before falling to the ground. Birds and nests and snowfall would adorn its branches in turn, and everything, even the eventual dismantling of the treehouse, was borne with a certain stoicism.

Hutch isn’t sure why this year is so different from any other, why the shift of the general population from the everyday malaise to a seasonal cheeriness should grate on him with such ferocity. But there’s something unsettling in the way it’s snuck up on him this year. Back home in Duluth, there’s always at least one layer of fresh snow to alert him to the change (and perhaps to cushion him from its impact) but Hutch hasn’t been home in a long time.

The tree that Starsky brings over and places on Hutch’s table is artificial. But Starsky’s smirk is genuine, the spring in his step more optimistic than grating. “The kind you put presents under,” he states in a tone that’s more than a hint. But Starsky has chosen blue and silver decorations that are easier on the eye than garish gold and red baubles, and Hutch can’t help but wonder if he’s done it on purpose.

“They say it’s only about fifty yards from the horse shoe pitch.”

The look on Starsky’s face is a predictable blend of incredulity and disappointment. Just as predictably, he joins in the laughter and jostles Hutch’s leg with his own.

Molly and Keiko are safe and well, and throughout the day there’s Starsky’s steady presence. It’s the best Christmas Hutch has had in a long time.

The artificial tree is still sitting on Hutch’s table on December 29th. Starsky seems to be scrutinizing its branches, brow furrowed and eyes narrowed.

“Wondering if any belated Christmas presents are going to magically appear under there?”

Starsky’s mouth twitches as he turns toward Hutch. “Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree.”

Starsky laughs at Hutch’s expression. “Don’t look so surprised.”

What Starsky doesn’t realize is that Hutch is startled by a flash of memory of his favorite tree, and the sudden realization of how much Starsky really does resemble it.

Hutch just offers a shrug and a small smile. “Just a favorite poem is all. Haven’t read it in a while.”

After the fiasco with the neighbor catching them in a kiss, Hutch finally relents and he and Starsky go inside for a little afternoon delight. But Starsky agrees to finish decorating the yard when they’re done. In their haste to finish the job, they accidentally swap clothes. As Starsky looks over what they’ve got to work with, he realizes it’s a bigger job than he thought.

It takes time, effort, and decision making, but finally the job is nearly finished. The arbor is decorated with poinsettias, There are packages and a big box with Merry Christmas that lights up, and all they have left to do is put the hat on the snowman. As their neighbor returns home, this time, he finds them finishing up their task as he waves and they return the wave. Hutch figures it’ll be awhile before Starsky tries to steal a kiss near the evergreens again.

December 17th- Accidental Desire Part One by ksstarfire

Starsky was worried about Hutch.

And feeling very guilty. Hutch wouldn’t have been hurt if not for him.

They had run into trouble today chasing a couple of men accused of armed robbery and assault into an alley. As shots rang out, Hutch had grabbed Starsky’s arms and pulled him to safety behind a large wooden crate.

December 16th- For One… Not Thousands by Lisa A

Many thanks to Keri T for her patience in editing and teaching me about POV.

Please don’t die.  The prayer kept repeating in his mind. Please don’t die. Starsky had found Callendar yesterday, brought him in to the ER and the doctors had taken his blood hours ago. Hutch had already been given one round of the antidote, but his recovery was slow-going. Starsky stood outside of Hutch’s room, looking at him through the window. Hutch was wearing an oxygen mask instead of being under the oxygen tent, but still looked like he was struggling for every breath. Why doesn’t he seem any better?

This can’t be it, he thought. Not when we were so close to finally admitting the truth to each other. They had been gradually moving in the direction Starsky had dreamed of for so long. He and Hutch had danced around it and just a few days ago, he knew it would happen soon. The looks between them were becoming more intense, the touches lasting longer and happening more often than usual. Then Hutch got the plague and Starsky’s world shattered.

December 16th- Caught in the Act Part 1 by Lisa B

Hutch has yielded to Starsky’s enthusiasm for Christmas and wants to get the yard decorated. Starsky has other ideas. Hutch ignores him and heads for the yard, pulling out all the things they’ll need. But Starsky grabs him near the evergreens and plants one on him.

A neighbor sees them and honks from the road, making them disengage quickly. Starsky quickly dons a silly hat meant for the snowman to give the neighbor something else to focus on. The neighbor gives them a friendly wave, but he knows what he’s seen.

As the neighbor drives on, laughing, they continue to wave while Hutch considers how deep he can bury his partner in the snow and make him part of the Christmas decorations.

To be continued…

December 15th- Mind Drift by Suzan

Commentary from Flamingo: Pacific Rim is a 2013 American science fiction monster movie set in the future, when Earth is at war with the Kaiju, colossal sea monsters that emerge from an interdimensional portal on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. To combat them, humanity creates Jaegers, 250-foot robots, controlled by at least two pilots, whose minds are joined by a mental link called “drifting.”  You can see the official trailer for Pacific Rim here. And see two pilots, brothers, suit up and mind meld in this clip.

When pilots drift, they gain intimate knowledge of each other’s memories and feelings. The concept of drift-compatibility made for excellent shipping opportunities and became a common fusion AU in fandom.

When I introduced Suzan to this film, I wasn’t thinking of Starsky and Hutch. But as we discussed drift compatibility, I realized the boys, with their intense partnership, would make them prime Jaeger pilots. And the tight black uniforms they wear would be just perfect for Starsky and Hutch.
