It was a comfortable spring day on the streets of L.A. Sunny, with a gentle breeze. Dave sat in his cab along the curb, watching and waiting. He had picked up a number of fares during the day, some from dispatch, some pick-ups from the taxi stands. Then he spent some time just driving around, hoping to pick up random fares.

After following up on Jackson’s suggestion, he’d been driving the cab for about three months now. It wasn’t a bad job, just one he knew he wouldn’t want to do forever. As Jackson had said, the pay wasn’t great but at least he made enough to pay Jake for the room, buy food, and have a bit of fun. And he wasn’t hanging around the bar all day. He’d realized early on that could become a problem. Continue reading

December 15th- Merger and Acquisition by Dawnwind

Note: This story is a sequel to A Women’s Work Is Never Done posted in the 2017 Advent Calendar.

“Did you put the champagne on ice?” Minnie asked, expertly cutting the cheese for the plate already brimming with salami, crackers, a bowl of spinach dip, and slices of French bread.

“What if they say no?” Linda asked, biting her thumbnail.

“To champagne?” Minnie laughed, wiping her hands on the dishtowel. “You know those boys better’n that.”

“That’s not what I mean,” Linda fretted. “I—” She stopped, shrugging. “All this planning, discussion…could be for nothing.” Continue reading

December 14th- Hope Springs Eternal Part 2 – French Fries and Promises by M H E Priest

Terry sits on the bench between the two best men in her life, enjoying the heat from the sun and them, the squeals and laughter from the other people who’d decided to come to the amusement park today, and the simple pleasure of breathing. Still breathing. That’s good. The smile already on her face grows larger.

“Whatcha thinking, honey?” asks Starsky. She hears the concern and fear beneath the sparkle in his tone. In different circumstances, she might have said yes to his proposal and they’d be celebrating their engagement in the privacy of his bedroom. Continue reading

December 13th- Silver Lover by Lucy

Your soft snore awakens me… along with a call of nature signaling
Me to get rid of the beers we had with pizza last night.

I pad quietly back from the john to the bed and I stop… just standing
There for a minute… to look at you…and appreciate.

Hell, I don’t know how else to describe what I’m doing… you are
So beautiful as you sleep.

The breeze from the open window barely moves one of the curls just
Above your ear. I watch it pick up the moonlight’s caress… that simple thin
Silver strand performing a gossamer dance.

I take the few remaining steps to the bed and I softly whisper, “I look
At you a lot while you sleep, babe, and you are unaware, the only way I can
Get away with it.”

…But I have to wonder… are you really that beautiful or is
It that I just love you so much the feeling fills the room.
